GiveWP alternative for nonprofits in Turkey: Flux Donate vs GiveWP

Flux Donate ile GiveWP yan yana: Türkiye için ödeme yöntemleri

GiveWP is usually the first name you hear when you want to take donations on WordPress, and for good reason. It runs on more than a hundred thousand sites, has years of development behind it and is well documented. We tried it first too, before we wrote Flux Donate. For a nonprofit raising money in Turkey, though, it gets stuck at the very first step: getting paid. This post compares the two plugins on the same questions and is just as clear about where GiveWP is the better pick.

The short answer

  • Payments: GiveWP’s free card and wallet gateways are Stripe, PayPal and Venmo. None of them opens accounts for organizations based in Turkey. Flux Donate takes cards through iyzico and tracks bank transfers with an uploaded receipt.
  • Monthly giving: a paid add-on in GiveWP, built into Flux Donate.
  • Foundation: GiveWP is standalone. Flux Donate uses WooCommerce for orders, payments and refunds.
  • Choose GiveWP if your organization can use Stripe or PayPal, you do not want WooCommerce on the site, or you run peer-to-peer campaigns where supporters build their own fundraising pages.

The real blocker: getting paid

GiveWP’s free version takes cards through Stripe, with PayPal and Venmo next to it. Stripe does not open accounts for businesses registered in Turkey, PayPal has not operated in Turkey since 2016 and Venmo is US only. That leaves a Turkish nonprofit with offline donations, which shows your bank details and leaves it to you to check whether the money arrived.

GiveWP’s own gateway add-ons do not include iyzico, PayTR or another local provider. You can find a third-party bridge or write one, but then the most important part of your fundraising depends on code outside the main product.

Flux Donate solves this by building on WooCommerce. iyzico’s official WooCommerce plugin takes the card, with instalments, 3D Secure and saved cards. Bank transfers, which are a large share of donations in Turkey, get their own method: the donor sends money with a personal reference code, uploads the receipt on the thank-you page or in their account, and you approve it in one click with the receipt next to the donation. If the same receipt is uploaded twice, you get a warning.

Monthly giving

Regular gifts are what make a nonprofit’s budget predictable. In GiveWP they come with the paid Recurring Donations add-on and again rely on a provider such as Stripe or PayPal. In Flux Donate they cost nothing extra: the donor ticks “Repeat monthly”, the card is stored with iyzico and the gift renews every month with the same card. A failed payment is retried after 1 and 3 days. The dashboard shows active recurring donations and monthly recurring income on their own.

Why WooCommerce?

It is a trade-off, and it has a cost: you need WooCommerce on the site. In return, every payment provider that works in Turkey already has a WooCommerce plugin, and refunds, order notes and accounting exports come from a well-known base. If you also run a shop, donations and sales sit in the same admin.

Donors never see a shop. Donation types are hidden products that do not show up in the catalog. The checkout has no address fields, cart or shipping, only one contact block, one consent checkbox and a “Pay” bar fixed at the bottom of the screen. The amount always comes from the donation type, never from a price sent by the browser.

Certificates and gifts on behalf of others

With saplings, sacrifices or scholarships, people often give in someone else’s name and want something to show for it. GiveWP has tribute options and offers PDF receipts on paid plans, but it does not produce a certificate per name. In Flux Donate one donor can give saplings for five people in a single payment, and each name gets its own certificate. Flux Certificates renders it as a PDF, adds a verification page and sends it by WhatsApp or e-mail.

When GiveWP is the better choice

  • Your organization is in a country where Stripe or PayPal works. Then GiveWP’s payments work out of the box, and the free version covers a lot.
  • You do not want WooCommerce. GiveWP stands on its own. Flux Donate does not run without WooCommerce.
  • You run peer-to-peer campaigns. Supporter pages, teams and leaderboards are on GiveWP’s paid plans. Flux Donate does not have them.
  • You want a large ecosystem. GiveWP has years of documentation, add-ons and a big user base.

Frequently asked questions

Does GiveWP work in Turkey?

The plugin installs and the forms work. The problem is payments: Stripe, PayPal and Venmo in the free version do not serve organizations based in Turkey. Taking cards needs a third-party gateway bridge.

Does Flux Donate need WooCommerce?

Yes. Donations are stored as WooCommerce orders and paid with WooCommerce payment methods. You do not have to open a shop; donation types are not shown to visitors as products.

Can I use it without iyzico?

Yes, with bank transfers only. The reference code, receipt upload and approval flow work without cards. Monthly giving needs a saved card, so it needs iyzico.

Can I run both on the same site?

They do not conflict technically, but donations would be stored in two places, so reports and donor records are split. We recommend settling on one.

Bottom line

GiveWP is a good donation plugin, but the payment world it assumes does not exist in Turkey. If your donors are in Turkey and you take money by card or bank transfer, a tool with that side ready gets you there faster. Flux Donate was written for exactly that. If you also want to reach donors abroad in their own language, read our multilingual SEO guide.
