Two names lead when you look for a WordPress SEO plugin: Yoast SEO, on more than ten million sites, and Rank Math, past four million. Both are solid, and their free versions are enough for many sites. This post compares Flux SEO with them, explains why Flux SEO takes a shorter route, and says plainly when the others are the better pick.
The short answer
- Yoast SEO does the basics well for free. The redirect manager, internal linking suggestions and IndexNow are in Premium.
- Rank Math gives much more for free: redirects, a 404 monitor and Search Console integration. Advanced schema and analytics are in Pro.
- Flux SEO sets the basics right by default, lists what is missing page by page and includes IndexNow. You can also ask an AI assistant (Claude or any MCP client) to “fix the SEO gaps”.
- Choose a competitor if you need readability analysis, a redirect manager, rank tracking or WooCommerce product schema.
Comparison table
| Yoast SEO / Rank Math | Flux SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Title, description, canonical, Open Graph | Both. | Yes. The share image is saved as a 1200×630 JPEG copy so WhatsApp previews stay sharp. |
| Schema | Yoast: basic schema, more types in Premium. Rank Math: 16+ types, advanced schema in Pro. | Organization or NGO, WebSite, BreadcrumbList, Article. |
| Sitemap | Both have their own sitemap. | Uses the WordPress sitemap, removes thin pages and adds lastmod. |
| IndexNow | Premium in Yoast. Rank Math has an Instant Indexing module. | Included, with the key file served automatically. |
| Redirects and 404s | Premium in Yoast. Free in Rank Math. | Not available. |
| Site-wide list of issues | Per-post analysis. A site-wide task list is in Yoast Premium. | SEO check: every page and its issues in one list. |
| AI | Yoast’s AI tools are Premium. Rank Math’s Content AI runs on credits. | MCP server: connect your own Claude or AI client; it works with the user’s permissions. |
| Readability analysis | In Yoast. | Not available. |
Why a shorter plugin?
Big SEO plugins bring dozens of screens, a setup wizard and upgrade prompts. A small team needs the basics done right and kept right. Flux SEO has no setup wizard. Titles, descriptions, canonical, robots, Open Graph, schema and the sitemap come with sensible defaults. Cart, checkout and account pages, search results and author archives are set to noindex automatically.
A to-do list: the SEO check
An SEO score helps while you write. Looking at the whole site, the question is which page is missing what. Flux SEO’s SEO check reads every published page and shows the issues in one list: long titles, empty descriptions, no featured image, thin content, no internal links. Use it alongside our WordPress SEO checklist.
AI, with your own assistant
Flux SEO comes with an MCP server. Connect Claude or another MCP client with a personal key, say “fix the SEO gaps”, and the assistant reads the same list and fills in the fields. It works with the permissions of the user who owns the key. New content is created as a draft, deletes only move to the trash and every call is logged. No separate AI credits to buy: you use your own AI account.
When a competitor is the better choice
- You want readability and keyword scores. Yoast’s readability analysis guides writers as they type. Flux SEO checks a focus keyword but has no readability analysis.
- You need redirects and 404 monitoring. Rank Math has them for free. Flux SEO does not.
- You run a large WooCommerce store. Product schema with GTIN and MPN is more detailed in Rank Math Pro and Yoast’s WooCommerce add-on.
- You want rank tracking and Search Console data in the admin. Rank Math’s analytics module does that.
Frequently asked questions
Will my titles disappear if I move from Yoast to Flux SEO?
Flux SEO uses its own fields. Check the titles and descriptions of your key pages before you switch; the SEO check will list any that are empty.
Can I run two SEO plugins together?
We do not recommend it. Both would print the same tags twice and cause canonical or schema conflicts.
Bottom line
Yoast SEO and Rank Math remain strong, feature-rich choices. If you want the basics done right, the gaps collected in one list and an assistant that can fix them, Flux SEO takes the shorter road.
